HOLIDAY HOURS
The library will be closed on Monday, January 17, for Martin Luther King Day

AGING IN WAYLAND
During January, we will be focusing on the topic of aging. On Tuesday, January 11, at 7:30 p.m., our Great Presenters program will focus on community services and resources available to older adults in Wayland that will assist them in staying in their homes.  Representatives of several town organizations serving adult residents will form a panel for this presentation. We will introduce a new online Directory of Services for Older Adults sponsored by the Library. This presentation will be in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building.

WHAT’S NEW IN SENIOR CARE?
Continuing the aging theme, on Tuesday, January 18, in the Raytheon Room from 7-9 p.m., Linda Smith, principal of MetroWest ElderCare Management in Wayland, has assembled a program featuring a panel of experts to discuss “What’s New in Senior Care.”  A far longer lifespan presents elders (and the generations that follow) with a variety of never-before-seen opportunities, as well as brand new challenges.  A distinguished panel of elder experts will discuss how to navigate this new terrain, followed by Q&A period.  One of the panelists will be Dr. Juergen Bludau, acting chief of clinical geriatric services and director of the Center for Older Adult Health at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Other panelists include Wayland resident Carol Sneider Glick, an elder law attorney; author Dr. Deborah Bier, director with Caring Companion Connections, a family-owned home care agency; and Linda Smith herself, who is a private registered nurse and a certified professional geriatric care manager interested in working with families to create safe and cost effective plans for eldercare.  There will be a follow-up program on the evening of February 15 on the “Essentials of 21st Century Caregiving.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG ANDERSON
In January, Doug Anderson will present photographs in an exhibit entitled Sardinia:  Island Frontiers.  Deceptively central on a map of the Mediterranean, this Vermont-size island tends to feel more like the edge of the Earth.  The exhibit showcases the island's mythical landscape and some of the people who call it home.  A native of Wayland, Doug spent a year in Sardinia (2007-2008) as recipient of Harvard’s Henry Russell Shaw Fellowship and the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Fellowship.  Having just completed a program in radio documentary at the Salt Institute in Portland, Maine, he is looking forward to a career in producing multimedia documentary.

EARRING WORKSHOP
On Saturday, January 22, from 2-4 p.m. Norma Radoff returns to the library to give a fourth workshop for beginners on working with semi-precious stones. All materials will be provided, but if you have your own beads, please DO bring them. Register online through our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.  If you have already taken this class, please don't sign up, as others are waiting.

WAYLAND READS EXHIBIT
The January exhibit in the Wayland Cultural Council Gallery in Town Building is hung by the “Wayland Reads” Committee to promote the book, Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers.  The exhibit will highlight the Wayland-to-Waveland connection, information on “Wayland Reads” community events and book discussions, and artwork inspired by Hurricane Katrina. Join us for a kick-off reception for “Wayland Reads” on Thursday, January 20, from 7-8 p.m. in the gallery at the Town Building.  The exhibit is sponsored by the Wayland Cultural Council.
