COA  Free PRE-RETIREMENT SERIES – Part 3: Financial, Thursday, September 23, 7pm, Sr. Center.  Residents considering the financial impact of retirement  are welcomed to attend a program presented by guest speaker and Wayland resident, Samuel Kiefer. The goal of this evening is to provide the listener with the tools needed to make informed decisions regarding their own financial management.  Historical trends, product type descriptions and questions to ask yourself when creating a financial plan for your retirement will be discussed. Q&A will follow the presentation.

COA FOCUS GROUP, Oct. 6, 7pm for Senior Center Feasibility Study.   At the Spring Town Meeting, Wayland voters approved a Senior Center Feasibility Study to identify future needs of the COA.  The COA works with  residents 60 years plus as well as younger residents with elder concerns.  Twenty five percent of Wayland’s population is 60 years of age or older. Gary Graham of GMI Architects will serve as facilitator for this Focus Group on Wed. evening, Oct. 6 at 7pm in the Senior Center. Attendees will look at past, present, and future  trends of the Council On Aging. Increased life expectancies and the changing economic climate will be considered. Participants will work in small groups to pool information, analyze and present conclusions.  Focus group discussion will help to define the base for future COA programs, services and  space requirements. Results will be incorporated into the Town’s Senior Center Feasibility Study.  Your input is needed.  Please join us for coffee, refreshments and a very interesting evening.
 
Don’t’ miss this free  lecture, Oct. 13, 7pm: Best Selling Author MICHAEL TOUGIAS discusses his gripping book:  TEN HOURS UNTIL DAWN.   Lecturer and best selling author Micahel Tougias will tell this story of heroism and tragedy aboard the Pilot Boat “Can Do” off the cost of Gloucester in the blizzard of ’78. Using slides of the boats, photos of the storms as well as audio recordings from that night, he will depict that ten hour period as the men fought for survival. Although books will NOT be for sale, the author will autograph books that participants bring that evening. Due to limited space, please pre-register for this free presentation made possibly by a grant from the Friends of the Wayland Council On Aging, Inc.

BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OPEN REHEARSALS – Bus transportation for the 2010/2011 Season. Sign up now. There will be four evening rehearsals: October, 20, February 23, April 6, and May 4. The cost for transportation for the season is $80.  This year we will also be attending the morning rehearsals on:  November 4, January 13 and March 10. The cost for the morning session  is $60.  To order your Open Rehearsal tickets, please call the  Boston Symphony at 866-266-7575. BETTER BALANCE – “Independent and Upright Living” Next session held on the following dates: Sept. 24, Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29 (No class Oct. 1st) $32 for session.   All classes are on Fridays, 10:30am-11:30am in the Hearing Room.  Leslie Worris of the Wellness Alliance teaches strategies to avoid and prevent falls.  Have fun while learning to improve your balance and increase strength.  Using balls, bands, weights and incorporating yoga and tai chi, improve your  posture, flexibility, mobility, stability, breath, endurance and maintain your  independence.   Pre–registration required – no less than one week before classes start.  We cannot pro-rate class fee for missed classes; participants may not join mid-session.
 
TAI CHI for Stress Reduction.  Wednesday, 10:30am-11:30am, Hearing Room.  If not pre-registered for this class, the cost is $8.00/class (If you’re starting mid-month, attendees will be pro-rated to end of month ($5/class).  Learn to use the Tai Chi form to reduce stress, increase your physical balance and  "sense" of balance. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself.  Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. (Pre-registration for September  is $25 -5 Wednesdays). Individual classes are $8.00 if not pre-registered. (Should you decide to join the class and pre-pay for the month, your class fee will be pro-rated at $5/class.)
 
LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE   Every Tuesday & Thursday, 10—11am, Hearing Room.  $2.00/class. Lois Leav, Instructor.  Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. This  class adapts to all fitness levels. Exercises can be modified to meet individual needs.  Pay only when you come. This is enjoyable way to exercise and meet new people.  No pre-registration required.

AUTUMN IN BEAUTIFUL VERMONT – Oct. 6–8, 2010 – $495/pp double. Two nights at the charming Middlebury Inn located in a quaint college town. Visit the Vermont Teddy Bear Company to see their beautiful, hand-crafted bears and enjoy a Luncheon Cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen, Lake Champlain’s only Paddle-Wheeler. We’ll also visit the famous Morgan Horse Farm and the Shelburne Museum.
 
QUEBEC CITY  – 4 days and 3 nights, Oct. 10 – 13, 2010 – $770pp double occupancy. Trip includes 3 nights at the Chateau Laurier Hotel, Quebec City. Lunch at the famous Chateau Frontenac and explore “Old Quebec” with its shops, fashions and culture. Some of the other sights we’ll see will be: scenic Montmorency Falls, Ste. Anne DeBeaupre Basillica, Parliament Buildings. Six complete meals included in trip.
 
OKTOBERFEST – October 20, 2010. Sturbridge Host Inn, $74/pp. The Oberlaendler Hofbrau Band is a true Oktoberfest band made up of 12 wonderful and very talented musicians that performed the authentic sound of the German beer halls World Wide. If you like good German Food, Beer and Wine, and a lively afternoon of Bavarian Music, this is the place to be for Oktoberfest 2010.
