  • September 23 FINANCIAL: Wayland resident Sam Kiefer will give a primer on investment terminology (i.e. laddered bond fund), historical trends, questions you should ask yourself as you enter this next chapter and how to proceed forward.   (This presentation is NOT designed to create a personal investment strategy for participants.)  Mr. Kiefer is with UBS Financial Services.
  • September 30 LEGAL: Elder Law Attorney Denise Yurkfosky will discuss Power of Attorney, Healthcare Proxy, Trusts, Homestead Act, etc. ..This will be an overview of legal topics that should be reviewed as you enter retirement.  Atty. Yurkofsky is a Wayland resident, a past president of the Friends of the Wayland Council On Aging and a Wayland COA Board member.

Get Ready, Get Set, COOK, EAT, LAUGH, WIN!   WAYLAND’S IRON CHEF COMPETITION!  (Fundraiser for the Friends of the Wayland COA)    SANDY BURR COUNTRY CLUB, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. 5:30-8:00pm
Six Teams will prepare entrees and appetizers to be judged by professional chefs and celebrities in this timed cooking competition.  Come cheer on your favorite organization or department:  Sudbury Valley Trustees vs Dudley Pond Assoc. vs Wayland Business Assoc vs Wayland Schools vs Selectmen vs Public Safety.  Don’t miss this!  A fundraiser for the Friends of the Wayland COA, a 501c3. BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OPEN REHEARSALS – Bus transportation for the 2010/2011 Season. Sign up now. There will be four evening rehearsals: October, 20, February 23, April 6, and May 4. The cost for transportation for the season is $80. This year we will also be attending the morning rehearsals on:  November 4, January 13 and March 10. The cost for the morning session  is $60.  To order your Open Rehearsal tickets, please call the  Boston Symphony at 866-266-7575. TAI CHI for Stress Reduction. Wednesday, 10:30am-11:30am, Hearing Room.  If not pre-registered for this class, the cost is $8.00/class (If you’re starting mid-month, attendees will be pro-rated to end of month ($5/class).  Learn to use the Tai Chi form to reduce stress, increase your physical balance and  "sense" of balance. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself.  Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. (Pre-registration for September  is $25 -5 Wednesdays). Individual classes are $8.00 if not pre-registered. (Should you decide to join the class and pre-pay for the month, your class fee will be pro-rated at $5/class.)
 
LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE   Every Tuesday & Thursday, 10—11am, Hearing Room.  $2.00/class. Lois Leav, Instructor.  Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. This  class adapts to all fitness levels. Exercises can be modified to meet individual needs.  Pay only when you come. This is enjoyable way to exercise and meet new people.  No pre-registration required.

  • NORTHERN NATIONAL PARKS— September 17 – 24, 2010. Cost: $1,999/pp double. Highlights include Salt Lake City, Idaho Falls, Grand Teton and Craters of the Moon National Parks, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful.    (It’s not too early to sign up!  Call soon!)
  •  THE FINGER LAKES REGION, NEW YORK  –  August 8 – 11, 2010. Cost: $569/pp double. Includes a visit to New York State Museum, Syracuse/Skaneateles/Erie Canal, Salt Museum and the banks of Onondaga Lake, dinner cruise on the lake, William Seward Home, Sonnenberg Gardens, Fox Run Vineyards and more. NEED TRANSPORTATION?  Call the MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride” at  508 820 4650.  Door to door, shared van service is provided to Wayland residents 65 years of age or older, disabled of any age, or Wayland residents 60-65years of age who have used Wayland COA van service in the past year.  Pre-registration is required. Call MWRTA for further information on contact the Wayland COA. BOSTON SERVICE (including Jamaica Plain VA Hospital)  is now available for rides to medical appointments only-$5.00 each way. IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE MWRTA “DIAL A RIDE” AND THE MWRTA FIXED BUS ROUTE:

► MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride”.   Effective May 1, Dial-A-Ride is a “cashless debit system”- prepaid rides.  Call the MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride” at 508-820-4650. Pre-registration is required for all riders.
 Determine the frequency of your trips and fund your trip account with the MWRTA. Your account will be charged at the time your ride is provided.  Call the MWRTA for further information. Accounts may be funded by personal check or credit card.  Customers must maintain a positive balance in their fare account to book trips. Reminder that MWRTA will take you to Boston for medical appointments ($5 each way) but appointment must not be earlier than 10am and you must be ready to leave no later than 2:30pm.
 
►MWRTA FIXED ROUTE BUS.   The MWRTA fixed route bus is for anyone, any age (certain restrictions apply).  This is a fixed route looping bus.  It stops at various points on Rte. 30, Rte. 9 and Rte. 27.  Call Customer Service  (508-935-2222) at the MWRTA for additional information and times.  This is NOT a prepaid cashless system like Dial-A-Ride above.  Riders must have exact fare when they board (for adults 65yr+ fare is .75/ride, adults under 65yr fare is $1.50/ride).  This is a “flag down” bus at the Cochituate Ball Field (intersection of West Plain St and Pemberton Rd).          

For information  about FISH (Friends in Service Helping), a volunteer group providing rides to medical appointments when no other options are available, please contact the Wayland Council On Aging (508 358 2990).

MEDICAL TAXI VOUCHER SERVICE.  Pre-purchased vouchers ($15 for $25 worth of meter taxi time may be purchased by Wayland seniors at the COA.  Vouchers are good for trips to medical appointments ONLY.  Medical Taxi Voucher service is provided by JFK Transportation in Natick (508 653 4500)  Effective July 1st, the new one-way Boston rate for medical appointment is $60 on the meter (with your pre-purchased vouchers, your actual cost is $35 each way – plus tip).

COA VAN.  The COA van has a limited number of seats, so call the COA early to reserve a spot.  Unless otherwise indicated, the van driver will pick up/drop off  people at their homes for all trips.  (The following free trips are sponsored by the COA – not MWRTA. Call the COA to make your reservation.   Picks ups to start at 8:45 a.m. and return by 1:00.

  • Tuesday, Sept. 9 “AROUND TOWN ERRANDS”: Pick ups to start at 10:00. Home by 12:30. Stops at various banks, stores, cleaners, shops.
