Discovery Musuem Calendar of Events August 5-13

FREE Admission for active duty military & families as part of the Blue Star Museums Program, through Labor Day

All programs are free with admission unless otherwise noted.  Admission to The Discovery Museums is $10.50 for adults, $10.50 for children, $9.50 for seniors, and free for children under 1 and Members.  Please visit our website at www.discoverymuseums.org for additional information.

Thursday, August 5:  MARY ANNING: FOSSIL HUNTER, 10:00 AM Children’s Discovery
Do you love to learn about dinosaurs and other animals that lived a long time ago? Come explore how Mary Anning’s childhood passion for collecting fossils resulted in great discoveries in the field of paleontology. Listen to a reading of the book Mary Anning: Fossil Hunter by Sally M. Walker, touch some real fossils, and make your very own fossil rubbings book. Part of the SMART Gals Program Series sponsored by The Ramsey McCluskey Family Foundation.

Thursday, August 5: FETCH! LAB.  Drop-in 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM Science Discovery
Are you ready for a challenge? Design, build, and experiment when you do fun engineering and science activities inspired by FETCH!’s Ruff Ruffman! Sharpen your science skills and take home FETCH! resources to share with family and friends!  FETCH! Lab is offered with support from Red Hat, Inc.

Friday, August 6: SUMMER’S NIGHT SKY, 6 PM Science Discovery
Half-Price Friday Night!  Half-price admission starts at 4:30, both Museums open until 9:00pm.  Families are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy the campus at night.  The VeeBop ice cream truck will be here from 5:30-7:30pm.  Get ready for Perseid Meteor Shower (August 11-12) and learn about locating the constellations in the summer sky with science teacher Frank Meehan. Look through a telescope and make a sky chart to take home!

Saturday, August 7 – Sunday, August 8: DINOSAUR DIG, All Day Children’s Discovery
Conduct your own paleontology dig in our giant outdoor sandbox. Bring a dinosaur and join in the fun! We’ll provide the sand, tools, and fossils.

Saturday, August 9: FETCH! LAB – TOY CHEMISTRY, Drop-in 10 AM – 12 PM Children’s Discovery
Today’s challenge is to mix cornstarch and water together to form an unusual substance that acts like a liquid and a solid. This is chemistry at its craziest! A preschool-level adaptation of this popular FETCH! activity. FETCH! Lab is offered with support from Red Hat, Inc.

Monday, August 9: MAKING THE WHEELS TURN, Drop-in 1 PM to 4:30 PM Science Discovery
Explore exhibits and activities that are sure to get your wheels turning!  Energy and motion will come to life when you turn gears, test slopes, and compare energy sources. Be inspired to imagine ‘green’ cars that are fun, efficient, and fast! Learn about Progressive Insurance's Automotive X PRIZE, an exciting challenge to develop a new generation of affordable and super fuel efficient cars!

Wednesday, August 11: BUILD IT! OUTDOORS, Drop-in 10 AM to 12 PM Children’s Discovery
LEGO building for toddlers! Bring your imagination to build, stack, and sort using our enormous collection of DUPLOS. Construct your own architectural wonder or work together to build a museum-community sculpture.

Wednesday, August 11: HAVING FUN WITH FOSSILS & DINOSAURS! FEATURING PAULETTE MORIN, 11 AM Science Discovery
Dressed for digging and protected by her pith helmet, intrepid fossil hunter Paulette Morin introduces children to the wonders of our prehistoric past and dinosaurs using her five-foot tall storybook and an assortment of real fossils the children can explore. Thursday, August 12: GREEN DESIGNS WITH SOLAR IN MIND!, Drop-in 11 AM to 2 PM Science Discovery
Discover the power of the Sun as you experiment with small solar cars. Race them on tracks, send them through tunnels, and learn firsthand the benefits and drawbacks of using the sun to turn wheels. Learn about Progressive Insurance's Automotive X PRIZE, an exciting challenge to develop a new generation of affordable and super fuel efficient cars!

Come meet Bessie, the dinosaur mascot of The Discovery Museums. She’s loves to give high-fives and hugs! *Bessie is a costumed museum staff member.

Friday, August 13: COLD AS ICE, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Science Discovery
A Favorite Event!  Make chilly discoveries when you put salt, coins, and food coloring on a 300-pound block of ice. Learn about the chemistry and unique characteristics of this solid state of water as you experiment with ice cubes and play a creative ice cube board game!  Outdoor program.

Friday, August 13: Create and Construct with Boston GeoBlock!, Drop-in 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM Science Discovery
Half-Price Friday Night!  Half-price admission starts at 4:30, both Museums open until 9:00pm.  Families are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy the campus at night.  The VeeBop ice cream truck will be here from 5:30-7:30pm.  Discover LaQ, a unique Japanese modular construction toy that fosters creativity and expressiveness, as well mathematical and logical thinking. Build 2-D and 3-D artistic creations and models of structures during this workshop led by Hiro Aoki of Boston GeoBlock.
