Library self -checkout coming to some towns

Metrowest Daily News 7/22/10: Library self -checkout coming to some towns. Goodnow Library of Sudbury is turning up the volume on high tech with self-checkout, which it expects to debut in mid-August. With a touch of a computer screen, library patrons will be able to check out books, CDs and DVDs. Patrons can check out five to 10 books at a time without help from a librarian. Radio frequency identification technology (RFID), similar to that used on the automatic toll lanes on the Massachusetts Turnpike, will be used at checkout. Some area towns, including Natick, Weston, Wayland, Holliston and Shrewsbury, don't have the advanced technology of RFID, but they do have bar-code scanners, which allow patrons to check out books one at a time using the same system that librarians use.
