July 19, 2010

Wayland Police are investigating the theft of a bronze plaque from the World War II Memorial at the Lokerville Green on Route #30 and East Plain Street.  The plaque was dedicated to veterans from Wayland and reads, “"In Memoriam to those who made the supreme sacrifice for their country in World War II." The names of fifteen servicemen are listed on the plaque. . It has not been determined exactly when the plaque was stolen, although it was reported missing on July 18th by a member of Wayland’s Veteran’s Committee. Thefts of bronze plaques have been more prevalent recently and many area towns have experienced similar thefts. It is not known whether this theft is related to a recent rash of bronze plaque thefts in Belmont, Newton and Watertown that resulted in the arrest of a Newton man in March.

Wayland Police ask anyone that may have information regarding this theft to contact the Wayland Police Department at 508-358-4721. Residents are also asked to report any suspicious activity they may observe near the location of other bronze plaques located throughout town.
