SPECIAL ZUMBA SUMMER SESSION:
5 Weeks: July 21, 28, August 4, 11, 18; 2-3pm. $20
(Pre-registration and pre-payment for the 5 week session is required by Wed. July 14)
Zumba” eliminates the “work” from “working out”. It combines irresistible Latin and international music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves.  The extraordinary secret behind Zumba is how it magically motivates the body to efficiently burn calories, effectively tones all muscle groups, incorporates full range of motion and  improves the cardiovascular system.  HERE’S THE BEST NEWS: Whether you are a natural dancer or you think you have two left feet,  you will enjoy this class taught by CEIL SHARON, a professional choreographer and dance school  owner.  She is a senior herself and a Zumba Gold certified instructor.

TAI CHI for Stress Reduction.
Wednesday, 10:30am-11:30am, Hearing Room
If not pre-registered for this class, the cost is $8.00/class (If you’re starting mid-month, attendees will be pro-rated to end of month ($5/class).  Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and  "sense" of balance. Tai Chi allows you to physically, mentally and emotionally  feel YOUR flow aligning with the flow of nature. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, Temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself.  Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. (Pre-registration for June is $25 -5 Wednesdays). Individual classes are $8.00 if not pre-registered.. Should you decide to join the class and pre-pay for the month, your class fee will be pro-rated at $5/class
 
 LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE   Every Tuesday & Thursday, 10—11am, Hearing Room.  $2.00/class. Lois Leav, Instructor.  Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. This  class adapts to all fitness levels. Exercises can be modified to meet individual needs.  Pay only when you come. This is enjoyable way to exercise and meet new people.  No pre-registration required.

BETTER BALANCE, LIVING STRONGER
Next sessions held on: July 13, 20, and 27 and Aug. 3, 10 and 17. $19/for each 3-week session. Summer classes are on TUESDAYS 9:15am-10:15am in the Senior Center.   Leslie Worris of the Wellness
Alliance teaches strategies to avoid and prevent falls. Have fun while learning to improve your balance and increase strength. Using balls, bands, weights and incorporating yoga and tai chi, improve your posture, flexi-bility, mobility, stability, endurance and maintain your independence. Pre–registration required.

A MATTER OF BALANCE

Many seniors experience a fear of falling and restrict their activities. ―A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls‖ emphasizes strategies for reducing those fears. This BayPath program was devel-oped by Boston University and con-sists of 8, 2hour classes. The pro-gram received funding from healthy aging initiatives and is offered free to participants. The discussion com-ponent of the program (learning and sharing) is equally important to the exercise portion (which starts week 3). The exercise segment is approxi-mately 30 minutes. Learn to set re-alistic goals for increasing your own activity levels and what you should be alert to in your own home to create a safer environment.

Where did the year go? It will soon be time again for our annual barbe-cue. What's on the menu? BBQ Chicken, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, watermelon and more! Honky Tonk Piano Player, Gary Landgren, will add to the festivity while we eat! This event will be held in the Large Hearing Room. Call for reservations; this event fills up fast!

WAYLAND AUXILIARY POLICE SUMMER COOKOUT SUNDAY, AUGUST 22ND 11:00-1:00 – FREE
(RAIN DATE, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 12 11:00-1:00)
The Wayland Auxiliary Police will be hosting, cooking and serving a wonderful cookout on Sunday, August 22nd from 11-1 at the Wayland Town Building. Food will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, pasta salads, ceasar salads, desserts and beverages. You must call the Council on Aging to sign up. Music and more!! If you need a ride to this event, let us know and the police volunteers will pick you up.

MAINE LOBSTER-BAKE TOUR, BOOTHBAY HARBOR – July 28 – 30, 2010, $395/pp double. Two days of fun which will include 2 nights at Cap’n Fish’s Motel, boat cruise around picturesque Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay Playhouse show, sightseeing along the Maine coast and shopping at Freeport, three complete meals and a delicious Lobster-bake at Gray’s On the Harbor.

Door to door, shared van service is provided to Wayland residents 65 years of age or older, disabled of any age, or Wayland residents 60-65years of age who have used Wayland COA van service in the past year.  Pre-registration is required. Call MWRTA for further information on contact the Wayland COA. BOSTON SERVICE (including Jamaica Plain VA Hospital)  is now available for rides to medical appointments only-$5.00 each way. Call 508 820 4650 for additional information.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING THE MWRTA “DIAL A RIDE” AND THE MWRTA FIXED BUS ROUTE:

MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride”:   Effective May 1, Dial-A-Ride is a “cashless debit system”- prepaid rides.  Call the MWRTA “Dial-A-Ride” at 508-820-4650. Pre-registration is required for all riders.  Determine the frequency of your trips and fund your trip account with the MWRTA. Your account will be charged at the time your ride is provided.  Call the MWRTA for further information. Accounts may be funded by personal check or credit card.  Customers must maintain a positive balance in their fare account to book trips. Reminder that MWRTA will take you to Boston for medical appointments ($5 each way) but appointment must not be earlier than 10am and you must be ready to leave no later than 2:30pm.
 
MWRTA FIXED ROUTE BUS:   The MWRTA fixed route bus is for anyone, any age (certain restrictions apply).  This is a fixed route looping bus.  It stops at various points on Rte. 30, Rte. 9 and Rte. 27.  Call Customer Service  (508-935-2222) at the MWRTA for additional information and times.  This is NOT a prepaid cashless system like Dial-A-Ride above.  Riders must have exact fare when they board (for adults 65yr+ fare is .75/ride, adults under 65yr fare is $1.50/ride).  This is a “flag down” bus at the Cochituate Ball Field (intersection of West Plain St and Pemberton Rd).          

For information about FISH (Friends in Service Helping), a volunteer group providing rides to medical appointments when no other options are available, please contact the Wayland Council On Aging (508 358 2990).

MEDICAL TAXI VOUCHER SERVICE
Pre-purchased vouchers ($15 for $25 worth of meter taxi time may be purchased by Wayland seniors at the COA.  Vouchers are good for trips to medical appointments ONLY.  Medical Taxi Voucher service is provided by JFK Transportation in Natick (508 653 4500)  Effective July 1st, the new one-way Boston rate for medical appointment is $60 on the meter (with your pre-purchased vouchers, your actual cost is $35 each way – plus tip).

COA VAN
The COA van has a limited number of seats, so call the COA early to reserve a spot.  Unless otherwise indicated, the van driver will pick up/drop off  people at their homes for all trips.  (The following free trips are sponsored by the COA – not MWRTA. Call the COA to make your reservation.

MARKET BASKET in ASHLAND:  Mondays: July 12 and August 9.  Picks ups to start at 8:45 a.m. and return by 1:00.
“AROUND TOWN ERRANDS”: Pick ups to start at 10:00. Home by 12:30. Stops at various banks, stores, cleaners, shops. FREE. Summer dates to be
determined; call the COA if you’re interested.
TRIP TO CASTLE ISLAND: Tuesday, July 20th, Rain date July 21. Pick ups to start at 8:45 a.m. and return by 1:00. Day trip to Castle Island, South Boston. Lunch at Sullivan‘s food stand on your own. Walk, relax, watch the fish-ermen, watch the boats and planes taking off and landing at Logan Airport.
