Wayland Business Association Donates $1,500 to Wayland Charitable Committee

The Wayland Business Association (WBA) supports several town organizations each year – but none this year is doing more service than the Wayland Charitable Committee. During the current recession, many more residents are living on the edge financially and need a little help with food, rent, heat and even auto repairs to keep their families afloat.

This significant community need was presented to the WBA Executive Committee for a grant, and it was met with a donation of $1,500. The check was presented recently at a meeting of the four members appointed to the Charitable Committee by the town’s Commissioner of Trust Funds.

The Wayland Charitable Committee provides short-term financial assistance to Wayland residents. This assistance is given in a manner that respects integrity, independence and dignity of recipients. The committee’s work is funded entirely through private funds and donations (not taxes).

Residents needing short-term, emergency financial assistance call the committee’s message line (508-358-3624). Messages are monitored, and a committee member contacts applicants with the aim of providing rapid, timely help. Of course, all names and information are kept confidential.

The committee assists people who have lived in Wayland for at least one year. Payments are made directly to vendors and/or suppliers of services as needed. Grocery vouchers also are provided.

Help is available for utilities, medicine, food, rent, clothing, medical service, special dietary needs, and special transportation.

The Wayland Charitable Committee was formed in 1997 with a gift from Suzanne M. A. Leavitt, a long-time Wayland resident. Private donations are encouraged to help continue the assistance. To assist the Charitable Committee during this particularly difficult year, send your check, payable to the Wayland Charitable Committee, to the Commissioner of Trusts, Wayland Town Building. All contributions are tax deductible.

Background

The WBA’s fundraising activities and dues are used to support local organizations. The High School Scholarship Fund traditionally has been the primary focus. Last year, the WBA donated more than $8,000 to Wayland community organizations and expects to match that level this year. The WBA urges any group in town that needs funding for special projects to apply early for a grant. The application is available at their Web site: www.waylandbusinessassociation.org  The WBA was formed more than 30 years ago based on a mission of community support. In 2009, the Wayland Business Association grew to 99 members, and supported several community organizations with grants.
