Library News for the first week of January, 2010

WAYLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Dec. 31, 2009

Holiday Hours: The Library will be closed on Monday, January 18, for MLK Day.

Angels of Austria:  At 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 27, in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, filmmaker Judy Faust will present her documentary, "Angels of Austria: The Church that Reached Out to Holocaust Survivors." The film chronicles an Austrian church's attempts to reverse centuries of anti-Semitism in their hometown of Wiener Neustadt by inviting Jewish Holocaust survivors formerly of their town to return for a Week of Reconciliation in 1995. Judy Faust accompanies her mother, Trudy, to Wiener Neustadt and together they embark on an emotional roller coaster ride of grief, compassion, and healing. For adults and teens. Q & A with Judy Faust to follow screening.

WaylandCares Book Group:  The library is excited to be co-sponsoring a series of facilitated book discussions for parents. At the first meeting, on Monday, January 25, The Price of Privilege by Dr. Madeline Levine will be discussed. The book takes a critical look at one child-rearing myth after another and delves into the real causes of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders in teenagers from affluent, loving families.  Among other issues to be discussed is the point at which encouragement become unhealthy pressure.  For parents of upper-elementary through high school students. Starts at 7:15 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room. To ensure adequate seating, please reserve your spot by emailing Wayland_Cares@wayland.k12.ma.us.

Storytimes: On January 5, 12, 19, and 26, join us for an integrated arts program with Sharon Engler in which we will explore children’s books, music, and crafts. Ages 3-5. Siblings welcome. Registration is not required. We ask that parents and care givers participate in the storytime activities with their child or children. For more information, contact the Youth Services Department at 508-358-2308.

Itsy Bitsy Yoga: Yoga for ages 21 months to 4 years will be held on Wednesday mornings in January.  We ask that children who attend be pre-registered. To sign up, go to our online event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

Children’s Book Art:  The artwork of Beth Krommes, noted children’s book illustrator, is the subject of a January display in the library’s lower level display case.  Mounted by the Danforth Museum of Art, the display highlights the current exhibit, Winter Light, in the Danforth’s Children’s Gallery.  Winter Light showcases Krommes’ original picture book illustrations.  The Danforth Children’s Gallery reflects the Museum’s firm conviction that picture books are a young child’s first art gallery experience, teaching them about shape and color, as well as visual narrative.  We hope that seeing the art provided by the Danforth will inspire parents and children to visit the Children’s Gallery at the museum itself. The Danforth is located in Framingham Center (123 Union Avenue ).  The Friends of the Library provide a museum pass to the Danforth that can be reserved online from our website or by calling 508-358-2311.

Shlimovich photos:  Vladimir Shlimovich’s exhibit, "Enchanting Still Life," will be in the Raytheon Room during January. It includes color photos inspired by the Flemish still life style of 17th-century painters such as Pieter Claesz. A native of Moscow, Russia, Mr. Shlimovich has lived in Wayland since 1997. This exhibition offers his view of the world’s beauty from several angles.

Great Presenter Series: On Thursday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Robert Eyre will give a talk on “What You Need to Know About the Prostate.” Dr. Eyre is Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Urology at the Faulkner Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess/ Needham Hospital.

Evening Book Group: Our evening group will meet on Wednesday, January 6, at 7:30pm and will be reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. All are welcome at both our book groups. For more information, visit waylandlibrary.org or call 508-358-2311 and ask for Librarian Andy Moore.

Author Jenna Blum at the Library: The noontime group will meet next on Friday, January 8, and will be reading Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum. Ms. Blum has just published a new book and will be coming to our library to talk about her books on the evening of Monday, February 22. Mark your calendars.

Wills & Trusts in Uncertain Times:  From 5-7pm on Thursday, January 14, attorney Perry Ganz will present a seminar on basic estate planning and taxation in the library’s Raytheon Room.

Foreign Film Series:  The next film in our Foreign Film Series, on Wednesday, January 13, at 6:30pm, is the French film “Amélie” by director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.  Amélie is a young woman who had a decidedly unusual childhood in which she’s developed a keen imagination, an active fantasy life, and a whimsical, romantic nature.  The film chronicles what happens when she decides to step into the lives of others to help them out.

New England House Architecture:  On Tuesday, January 26, at 7 p.m., the architectural firm of Albert, Righter & Tittman will present a program based on their newly published book, New Classic American Houses: The Architecture of Albert, Righter & Tittman. In the book's foreword Robert A.M. Stern calls AR&T's work "refreshing in the grace of its erudition, lightly displayed, not flaunted." The firm has earned a well-deserved reputation for building on historical precedent in surprising and inventive ways. AR&T specializes in creating beautiful, singular houses that relate not only to the physical environment but also to local traditions.

Beginning Beading Workshop:  Experienced beader, Norma Radoff, returns to the library on Saturday, February 6, at 1pm to give a third workshop for beginners on working with semi-precious stones.  All materials will be provided, but if you have your own beads, please DO bring them. The class is limited to ten adults. Registration is through our online calendar of events at waylandlibrary.org or by calling 508-358-2311. We ask that past attendees not register for this to give others a chance to take this class.
