‘Wayland A-Z’: ‘R’ is for ‘Recreation’

Wayland Town Crier 12/18/09: 'Wayland A-Z': 'R' is for 'Recreation'. The American passion for organized outdoor competitive sports has been visible in Wayland for nearly a century and a half. The Live Oak Baseball Club, formed in Cochituate in 1867, first played the Natick Eagles at City Pastures, which was located south of Commonwealth Road (Route 30), just west of the intersection of Main Street and Commonwealth Road (routes 27 and 30). Home teams played at City Pastures for 16 years before moving to the "New Baseball Ground," a field behind the Lyon’s Shoe Factory on Main Street (now Griffin Ball field). Games continued there between the Wayland Meadow Hens and Cochituate Shop Ends, the lasters at Bent’s factory and the lasters at Bryant’s factory, and between the boarding houses of the Lovejoys and American House. Cochituate teams also played against the Waltham Watch Factory team and a Harvard College team
