Parents to start paying for children to ride bus

Wayland Town Crier 7/23/09: Parents to start paying for children to ride bus. Starting this fall, the Wayland School Committee is now requiring parents of all but children in grades K to 6 who live more than 2 miles from their schools to pay $180 per year per student to ride the bus.

In so doing, members of the committee and the school administration assert that Wayland is one of the last holdouts among surrounding and peer communities to institute such charges.

According to a Massachusetts Public Schools Survey of Fees by SuperEdNet.com, Lexington transportation fees are $550 per student (with a $1,600 family cap), and in Lincoln-Sudbury, the figure is $275. So far, both Weston and Dover-Sherborn, however, are still providing free transportation for all.
