High School Building Committee update

The following was submitted by the High School Building Committee:

On May 21, Mary Pichetti and John Jumpe from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) toured Wayland High School with Principal Pat Tutwiler, Assistant Principal Allyson Mizoguchi, architect Steve Millingon, project manager David Saindon, and High School Building Committee (HSBC) Chairwoman Lea Anderson.

The purpose of the visit was to see firsthand the areas where the Wayland High School program varies from the educational specification in the MSBA model. High participation in academics, art, music and athletics results in square footage that is higher than the MSBA guidelines, while special education inclusion and lack of a vocational program result in square footage that is lower than the MSBA guidelines. The HSBC and MSBA are continuing to work toward a final educational specification.

Earlier in the week, the HSBC held a community forum to bring the public up to date on the work of the committee and to solicit feedback. Pat Tutwiler reviewed the work of the Futures Team. George Metzger of HMFH Architects presented the various conceptual approaches the HSBC is considering – new construction with a renovated Field House, a combination of renovation and new construction, and mostly renovation. Frank Vanzler of KV Associates presented the process his firm will use to develop cost estimates of all design options.

Members of the community spent an hour commenting and asking questions. These comments and questions have been documented and are available, along with the presentation, on the HSBC’s Web site and at the library. The forum was recorded by WayCam, as are all HSBC meetings.

The next meeting of the HSBC is scheduled for Thursday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Committee conference room on the second floor of the Wayland Town Building. The community is invited to all HSBC meetings.

More information is available at www.waylandschoolcommittee.org/whs/hsbc and at the Wayland Library. In addition, if any group in town would like a presentation, we will do our best to find a representative from the HSBC to accommodate your needs.
