The League of Women Voters of Wayland will celebrate its 60th anniversary at its upcoming annual meeting on Wednesday, May 13. Long-time League members will present cameo reviews of each of the last six decades, with special focus on local issues.

What comes to your mind when you think of the League of Women Voters of Wayland – Candidates’ Night? Perhaps you recall some of the big issues the League has tackled in the past, such as “housing in Wayland” (1969-1970). That study led to zoning changes that allowed such developments as Mainstone Farm. Were you here in 1967-1968 when the League studied the structure of local government? From that study came the change from three Selectmen to five, and the election of Wayland’s first woman selectman, Katie Seiler, who had previously been the President of the LWV of Wayland. Do you remember the studies during the 1970’s of sexism in the schools? This one had widespread effects on the choice of textbooks, the availability of athletics for girls, and in-service workshops for teachers and guidance counselors. Other local topics have included inter-town transportation, school bus safety and the safety of microwave radiation.

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920, six months before women finally got the vote. From the beginning it has worked through citizen education and advocacy for improved government and public policy, while remaining strictly non-partisan.

The Wayland League’s annual meeting is open to everyone, with an invitation to enjoy some reminiscing and some 60th birthday cake. The meeting will be held in the Senior Center, starting at 7pm.
