Cheering on ‘varsity sport of the mind’

Wayland 3/19/09: Cheering on ‘varsity sport of the mind’. This past weekend, thousands of cheering fans filled Boston University’s Agganis Arena, waving pompoms and wearing team T-shirts, but no hockey game was going on. Rather, the three days were what founders Dean Kamen and Woodie Flowers call a “varsity sport of the mind.” The shouts and screams, the tension and excitement filling the air were for the FIRST Robotics Boston regionals of 2009. The team was founded last year and is still new to the competition and yet had an extremely successful season, ranking 25th in regionals out of around 60 teams.
