Community Emergency Response Team needs new volunteers

Wayland’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) receives free training in order to assist the town in the event of an emergency or public health disaster, such as a blizzard, hurricane, or widespread illness. With any luck, the team will never be utilized in an actual emergency, but in the meantime, you will receive training and join a group of dedicated volunteers who are willing to help should the need arise. Wayland, and many other towns, have formed CERT teams to develop the resiliency communities need. Volunteer opportunities exist for people with varying degrees of time to commit. Our next training course is scheduled to start in April. Class sessions will be on April 9, 13, 27 and 30, and May 2, 4, 7, 11 and 14. The course includes both lectures and hands-on training in areas such as first-aid, fire suppression, terrorism, and disaster psychology. Free disaster emergency supplies for CERT team members. No prior experience is necessary, just a desire to help your town and fellow residents. The course will be taught by Wayland police officers, firefighters and CERT personnel and is free of charge. If you are interested in joining the team, or want more information, email Joseph Boykin, CERT coordinator, or call 508-358-4688.
