Thursday, March 5, Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots of Prejudice toward Muslims and the Religion of Islam, Congregational Church of Weston, 7:30-9pm.

Each year the Weston Wayland Interfaith Action Group (WWIAG) offers the community opportunities to reflect on relevant religious and cultural issues in an effort to enhance understanding of the increasing diversity of our pluralistic society.  On Thursday, March 5 from 7:30 to 9 p.m., WWIAG will host the 11th annual Kerwin lecture, which will be delivered by Karen Hernandez-Andrews on the topic of "Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots of Prejudice Toward Muslims and the Religion of Islam."  Hernandez-Andrews, who holds a master’s degree from the Andover Newton Theological School, wrote a thesis about her field work in India where she researched Christian-Muslim relations in Banaras. She also holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College in peace and justice studies with a concentration in Islam.  Currently, she lectures about Islam, global Christian-Muslim understanding and relations, al-Qaeda, Islamophobia, and discrimination against Muslims post-9/11.  In March, she will travel with a peacemaking delegation from Christian Peacemaker Teams to Israel and Palestine, where she will learn firsthand about the efforts on the ground to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  WWIAG invites all to attend the lecture. It will take place at the Congregational Church of Weston, 130 Newton St. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Contact Lynn Retik at 781-647-0051 for more information.
