School Committee transportation policy under review

The Wayland School Committee has been reviewing its Student Transportation Policy (EEAA) and is contemplating changing it effective July 1, 2009.

Citizens can review the current and proposed wording of this policy online (or can visit the superintendent’s office in the Wayland Town Building during normal business hours where all School Committee policies are on file and available to the public).  Wayland residents and other interested people are encouraged to offer oral and/or written comments and reactions to the School Committee regarding the proposed policy changes before their March 9 and 23 meetings. At the March 23 meeting, it is the intent of the School Committee to take action on the revisions to Policy EEAA.  All School Committee meetings begin at 7pm in the School Committee Room on the second floor of the Town Building and are open to the public.

The proposed change is to institute a fee for all children who are not mandated by state law to receive free transportation.  Students in Grades K-6 who live within 2 miles of their school and all students in Grades 7-12 would be eligible for fee-based bus transportation, while students in grades K-6 who live outside of 2 miles from the school would continue to receive free transportation.

Annually, the School Committee reviews all of its policies and periodically writes new ones or revises existing ones as circumstances warrant. Committee members believe the proposed change to the Student Transportation Policy is in the best long-term interest of the Wayland Public Schools.

Questions concerning these changes may also be directed to Superintendent Gary Burton at 508-358-3763.
