"THE LIVES OF OTHERS" (Das Leben der Anderen) Germany 2006 The horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, a successful dramatist and his longtime companion, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don’t actually always think along party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in the actress, so a secret service agent named Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple. As he becomes immersed in their lives, their world gradually begins to fascinate him. By Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (Rated R, German with English subtitles, 137 minutes) |
