Local pols file bill to double gas tax, nix tolls

Wayland Town Crier 1/14/09: Local pols file bill to double gas tax, nix tolls. MetroWest lawmakers are preparing legislation that would more than double the state gas tax, eliminate tolls and generate enough new revenue to address staggering debt loads at the Mass. Turnpike Authority and the MBTA. Legislation in the works would set the state gas tax at 50 cents per gallon, up from 21 cents a gallon, earmarking revenue from 11 cents of the gas tax to the Turnpike Authority with other planned earmarks used to ensure stable funding sources for the MBTA, regional transit authorities, local road and bridge projects and the state highway department. The legislation would leave the Turnpike Authority with the option of establishing tolls at the New York and Connecticut borders.  Also sponsoring the bill are Reps. Tom Sannicandro, D-Ashland, Alice Peisch, D-Wellesley, and Tom Conroy, D-Wayland.
