Wayland Patch 2/12/13: Full Jury Seated in Fujita Trial. The 16th juror, a woman, was seated at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, rounding out the panel of jurors and alternates who will decide the verdict in the murder trial of Nathaniel Fujita. Fujita, now 20, was 18 years old at the time prosecutors say he killed classmate and ex-girlfriend Lauren Astley, 18, and dumped her battered and strangled body in a Wayland marsh near the Sudbury border. The jury consists of 12 individuals, seven men and five women, as well as four alternates, three men and one woman. The alternates will be present throughout the trial, but will not take part in verdict deliberations unless they are needed to replace a member of the seated jury.

Boston Globe 2/11/13: Insanity defense likely in Wayland murder trial. Nathaniel Fujita, a young Wayland man accused of murdering his former girlfriend in July 2011, will likely invoke the insanity defense at his trial, Judge Peter Lauriat told prospective jurors as jury selection began on Monday. “Mr. Fujita will likely be raising the issue of lack of criminal responsibility, commonly described as the insanity defense,” he informed potential jurors in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn during a longer discussion about the insanity defense.

Wayland Patch 2/12/13: Fewer than Half the Needed Jurors Seated on First Day of Fujita Trial. Ninety-two men and woman sat before Judge Peter Lauriat Monday answering questions designed to determine their impartiality should they be among the 16 jurors who will sit on the panel during Nathaniel Fujita’s trial on charges that include first-degree murder.

Wayland Town Crier 2/12/13: No jury yet for Fujita murder trial. Jury selection is scheduled to continue Tuesday in the case of a Wayland man accused of brutally murdering his young ex-girlfriend at his home in 2011. So far, seven jurors have been selected to hear the Nathaniel Fujita murder case.

Boston.com 2/10/13: Wayland schools prepare community for trial in death of Lauren Astley. With the trial in the July 2011 slaying of 18-year-old Wayland High School senior Lauren Astley set to begin Monday, the town’s school system is preparing to help students and faculty cope with the expected publicity and questions that may arise. Wayland School Superintendent Paul Stein sent a letter to the community last week outlining the school system’s approach and describing resources that are available. As the trial unfolds, Stein said it will undoubtedly rekindle memories of the students and the tragedy, and unleash a variety of emotions.

Metrowest Daily News 1/29/13: State seeks to admit alleged death threats by Fujita. Two years before his ex-girlfriend was found brutally murdered, Nathaniel Fujita threatened to violently kill and urinate on another teen for kissing her, prosecutors said this morning in Middlesex Superior Court. “(Fujita) said specifically he would slit his throat and then smash his head on a rock and then piss on him,” prosecutor Lisa McGovern said, describing words she attributed to a witness of the alleged threats.

Wayland Patch 1/29/13: Prosecutor: Fujita’s Behavior at 2009, 2011 Wayland Parties is Relevant. Whether events at two parties in 2009 and 2011 are relevant in the Lauren Astley murder case will be decided by a judge, leading up to the February trial of Nathaniel Fujita, accused of killing ex-girlfriend Astley on July 3, 2011. At a continued pre-trial hearing Tuesday, Jan. 29, (see Monday’s coverage here) Middlesex Superior Court Judge Peter Lauriat heard from Prosecutor Lisa McGovern and Fujita’s attorney, William Sullivan, on what evidence should be allowed at trial, including whether Fujita’s actions at a June 23, 2009, party and a June 4, 2011, graduation party should be admissible.
