Annual Fundraising Show at Vokes Raises $4,500 for Wayland Business Association

The annual Wayland Business Association (WBA) fall fundraiser held here last Thursday at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre netted more than $5,200 for the group’s support of Wayland community groups. Local businesses were very generous in donating items for the silent auction and the house was nearly sold out.

The Vokes Theatre donated its Thursday (Nov. 19) night performance of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street to the WBA, and their effort did not disappoint on any level. The show was fabulously and enthusiastically performed to great enjoyment. Patrons bid generously on dozens of items for auction – from a hand-made fleece blanket to baskets of goodies to a weathervane and even a framed print of Cochituate.

The WBA, of course, thanks the Vokes Theatre and its Director Donnie Baillargeon for making the benefit performance idea a reality. And, the WBA thanks the following businesses for their auction donations:
  • In Vogue Spa
  • Beautiful Nails & Spa
  • Somerby’s Hair Salon

Special thanks to JJ MacKay's Restaurant and Donelan's Supermarket for providing the food for the evening and to Post Road Liquors for donating wine for the event.

The money raised by the WBA increases the group’s grants to local organizations that need financial support each year. Last year, the WBA donated more than $8,000 to Wayland community organizations including $4,000 to the Wayland High School Scholarship Fund, and $1,000 grants to both WayCAM and the Wayland Charitable Committee. It gave $500 each to the Vokes Theatre, the Golden Tones, the Wayland Scouters and the Wayland Historical Society.

This year the plan is similar – although groups need to apply for the grants each year. The WBA urges any group in town that needs funding for special projects to apply early for a grant. The application is available at their Web site: www.waylandbusinessassociation.org

Background

The WBA was formed more than 30 years ago based on a mission of community support. In 2009, the Wayland Business Association grew to 99 members, and supported several community organizations with grants. The business group also changed its annual fundraising event from an auction to a night at a Vokes Theatre production.
