ADULT SERVICES

  • Deep Seeing: Creative Explorations of Climate Grief.  The next program in this series is a meditative art activity, via Zoom, sparked by the reading of the poem, “Hokusai Says” by Roger Keyes; viewing a selection of works by Hokusai; and creating a nature collage(s) from torn pages.  You’ll want to gather old magazines, flyers, photos, wrapping paper, wallpaper, printed fabric, and/or organic matter that you can tear to complete your collage.  The workshop will be led by Linda J. Hirsch, psychologist, photographer, photojournalist, meditation teacher, curator, framedrummer, and human rights activist.  Register through our Events menu.  Thursday, May 26 at 7 p.m.
  • Asians in American Pop Culture. Journalist, editor, and author Gil Asakawa will discuss the cultural shifts from Sessue Hayakawa’s and Anna May Wong’s stardom in silent movies to white actors in “yellowface,” to Asians’ current success on TV and the big screen.  Hosted by the Ashland Public Library, co-sponsored by the Wayland Public and Cary Memorial (Lexington) Libraries.  Register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, May 31 at 7 p.m.
  • Chinese-American Contributions to the Fabric of America. The US has reached a moment when it is critical to examine how diversity has benefited the society and how minority groups such as Chinese-Americans have, over time, become identified with the country itself. This program will focus on a landmark study of 175 years of Chinese-American history, and is presented in recognition of Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in collaboration with  the Wayland Chinese-American Association and the Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.  Register through our Events menu.  Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m.
  • Masterpieces of Classic Cinema on Kanopy. Kanopy is a free video streaming resource provided by the Wayland Library for its patrons. Within it lies a particularly strong collection of important classic movies from the silent era to the 1960s.  This one-hour talk will describe many of these movies and discuss their influence in the history of cinema.  Freelance editor and publisher Randall Warniers has studied early 20th-century American cinema for decades.  Register through our Events menu.  Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m.
  • Wayland History Collection in Focus. We are busy conserving, digitizing and cataloging Wayland historical documents rarely seen before by the public, including maps and plans.   Reference staff can help you find information on a specific topic, whether it is anti-slavery, Lake Cochituate, the many articles in our files related to Wayland history, or anything else.  To reach the library’s local history librarian, please contact M.J. Wright at mwright@minlib.net or by calling the library. Appointments are necessary to see primary resources and historical maps.
