ADULT SERVICES

  • Great Presenters: The World’s Emergency Room. Dr. Michael VanRooyen is the Director of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative at Harvard University.  He is also the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at both Mass General and Brigham & Women’s Hospitals.  What’s more, he has worked in humanitarian relief settings for over 30 years, in most of the world’s active war zones.  He will discuss the radical changes in the way the global community provides emergency humanitarian aid for the world’s most vulnerable populations, and highlight major innovations in the field of humanitarian relief.  Register through the Events menu on our home page.  Thursday, February 3 at 7 p.m.
  • The Black Art Market. Art collector and historian Charles Moore will reveal the history of African American art and explore the culture, the storied lives, and the everyday struggles and triumphs of the African-American experience.  Author of The Black Market: A Guide to Art Collecting and The Brilliance of the Color Black Through the Eyes of Art Collectors, Moore introduces novice and would-be collectors to the art world, its deep roots, its connections to our pasts, and its hopes for our future.  Register for the Zoom link.  Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m.
  • ESOL Tutors Needed. It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak a foreign language or have never taught before.  Once you complete the Library-sponsored training course, you’re ready for what could be a wonderfully rewarding relationship.  The course for this winter/spring will be on Zoom, from 2-5 PM on five consecutive Wednesday afternoons: March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.  For more information or to enroll, contact Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or virginia@thesteels.com.
  • Online Access to Business Press. The Wall Street Journal, Banker & Tradesman, Barrons, IBD, The Economist—we used to have   them only in print form.  Now, when you’re in the library, you can get to their online versions, containing additional content and features.  You can also go online for The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, National Geographic, and The New Republic.  Just stop by the Reference Desk, and the librarian will log you in.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

  • Weekly Facebook Live Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly for a Facebook Live storytime on the Wayland Public Library’s Facebook page. Babies through preschool age are invited to listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. Tuesdays, Feb. 8, 15 and 22 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Storytime on Zoom with Ms. Pam. Join Ms. Pam for stories songs, puppets, and crafts through zoom.  This interactive storytime encourages language development, socialization and fun. FEBRUARY VACATION SPECIALS

  • Make a Birdfeeder. Children are invited to make pinecone birdfeeders and learn about birds that overwinter in Wayland. Children are encourage to hang their birdfeeders at home and look for birds. Children who identify 5 Wayland birds can come to the library for a small prize. We will meet outside on the green lawn behind the library. (If weather is bad we will provide birdfeeder kits to take home.) Registration is required. Register HERE or online from our eventkeeper calendar. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
  • Comic Making Workshop with Jarrett Lerner over Zoom. Local author-illustrator Jarrett Lerner will give tweens the tools they need to become more confident and capable comics creators. Jarrett will demonstrate some drawing techniques, will talk about what makes comics work, and will give time for participants to create along with him. This workshop is appropriate for kids new to comics as well as for kids who are further along on their comics-making journey. For ages 10 and up. Register HERE for the zoom link. Thursday, February 24, at 3:30 p.m.
  • Kids Cooking Green: Chocolate Peppermint Cookies. Join us in the kitchen to make Chocolate Peppermint Cookies. Participants will be sent a recipe with a list of ingredients and recommended kitchen utensils in advance of the workshop. This workshop is led by Kids Cooking Green, and will be held over zoom.
