  • Author Talk: From Schnitzel to Nockerln with Joy Viola. With her late husband, Alfred, Wayland resident Viola traveled by horseback, zodiac, combi, tundra buggy, and small aircraft to photograph and write about the natural world on all seven continents.  They came face to face with a polar bear, dined with sheikhs, and put more than 2,300 species on their birder’s life lists.  Register through our Events menu to hear these and other tales.  Thursday, December 9 at 7 p.m.
  • Library Gift Guides. We’ve got them for adults, kids, and teens, with lots of great book ideas for every reader on your list.  Pick up print copies at the library or find them online at our Library Spotlight blog.
  • Wayland History Online. Wayland High School yearbooks going back to the 1940s.  The Cochituate Jeep and the Village Bugle, two newsletters produced for hometown boys on the front during WWII.  The Wayland Town Crier from 1950 to 1961.  You’ll find all this and more at waylandlibrary.org.  Just click on About Us, then (under About WFPL) Digital Wayland and Library Archive.  It’s a treasure trove of local history, just waiting to be explored.
  • New ESOL Tutors. If you happen to bump into Lauren Alongi, Sue Robison, or Steve McCarthy, be sure to congratulate them on their new identity as ESOL tutors.  All three, along with Bob Lewis and Melissa Rowcotsky of Weston, have completed the three-week training course and are now working with learners.  They join more than 30 other tutors currently teaching, mostly remotely, using whatever technology works for both tutor and learner.  The next (virtual) training session is in February; if you’re interested, contact Ginny Steel at virginia@thesteels.com for more information.
