Wayland Special Election to be held on October 2, 2018 Ballot Question – To Ban Recreational Marijuana Establishments

A Special Election will be held in Wayland on October 2, 2018.  Wayland residents will be asked to vote on a ballot question to ban recreational marijuana establishments in Wayland.  A “yes” vote on this ballot question would be in favor of adopting the Zoning Bylaw to prohibit all types of recreational marijuana establishments in the Town.  A “no” vote would be opposed to adopting the prohibitory zoning bylaw.  The ballot question does not address medical marijuana, only the cultivation, testing, research and sale of recreational marijuana.

At this time the Town of Wayland has a temporary moratorium on recreational marijuana establishments that expires on December 31, 2018.  After this date, marijuana establishments could potentially locate in town unless the October 2nd ballot question passes by majority.  If the ballot question passes, the town will be asked to vote at Special Town Meeting in November 2018 where a 2/3 majority vote would be needed to pass the full ban.  This vote and its outcome does not change the state law in regard to adult recreational marijuana usage. The Special Election, as well as the Town Meeting article only addresses the commercialization, cultivation, testing, research and sale of marijuana in the Town of Wayland.

The Planning Board has also created a Zoning Article that identifies where recreational marijuana establishments could be located for consideration at the Special Town Meeting if the full ban does not pass.  Events and steps taken leading up to the special election and more information can be found on the Planning Board website.  A copy of the special ballot question can be found on the Town Clerk’s website [direct link to sample ballot]. Absentee ballots are now available at the Town Clerk’s office. Applications for Absentee Ballots are available until noon on October 1st and can be found on the Town Clerk’s website. Ballots must be received in the Town Clerks office by 8pm election day. If you have any questions about absentee voting please contact the Wayland Town Clerks Office.
