Wayland and Weston Rowing Association raises funds through Ergathon

The Wayland Weston Rowing Association kicked off the beginning of the fall 2017 season with the annual Ergathon, a fundraising and community event held at Wayland Town Beach on Saturday, September 23.

The WWRA supports a highly competitive high school team with 110 students from Wayland High School and Weston High School, and a community-wide middle school program with 40 sixth-eighth graders participating this fall, and an adult recreational team.

The ergathon pits team members against each other as they race on rowing machines (ergs) in a bracketed tournament of eight kilometer races (about five miles). The fundraiser helps cover costs (shells (boats) can cost up to $45,000), bring the team together, and help develop community.

While the teams raced, parents and friends cheered them on, toured the boathouse, and enjoyed a hot breakfast. At the conclusion of the event a number of wonderful prizes were raffled off including gift cards from local restaurants, a WWRA oar and a custom-designed WWRA cornhole set. In total, the event raised over $26,000. The team will continue to collect donations through Friday. We are thankful and grateful for your donations and participation in the event.

Looking ahead to next week, WWRA takes to the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on Sunday, October 1 to kick off the racing season. For more information on the Ergathon or WWRA, please visit us at wwcrew.org or contact program director Mike Baker, rowingmike@gmail.com
