The Town of Wayland’s Conservation Restriction Agreement on the Lincoln Road Farmland Closes

The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) announces that the Town of Wayland has closed the transaction with the owner of the Lincoln Road farmland. The Town acquired a conservation restriction on 22.6 acres known as the Lincoln Road Fields. Under the agreement, the property is restricted from development forever and will remain open space. There will never be any residential dwellings on the land. It will remain in private ownership, but the agreement provides for the continued use of the property for agriculture and conservation. The public has access to use the property by way of designated trails for passive recreation and educational activities.

Jerry Heller, Chair of the CPC said, “It was a complicated transaction that took the commitment of the Town and the owner of the property to complete, and we are pleased that a successful result was finally achieved.”

The Lincoln Road Fields abut conserved land owned by the Sudbury Valley Trustees, making it a part of an extensive trail network. Although the acquisition was approved at Special Town Meeting last fall, negotiations have been ongoing, and the Town was required to obtain the approval of the Commonwealth in addition to the Conservation Commission and the Board of Selectmen. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Town Counsel, the Conservation Agent and the CPC, and with assistance from staff at Sudbury Valley Trustees, the necessary approvals were obtained. The land is now available for the Town’s residents to use and enjoy.

A map of the property and trail access is available at the Conservation Agent’s office in the Town Building.
