October Waves of Relief
Wayland To Waveland Fundraising
Kicks Off Campaign This Week; Adult Volunteers Still Needed
October 2 –
Fundraising appeal letters will arrive this week at Wayland
homes to help pay for ongoing rebuilding activities in
Waveland, MS –Wayland’s Sister City that was devastated in
Hurricane Katrina last year. This first fund drive is hoping
to raise more than $120,000, most of which will go toward
the current plans to rebuild three homes in Waveland.
While one of the three recipients of the
Wayland to Waveland October Waves of Relief has significant
insurance funding to pay for most materials for her home,
the other two were not so fortunate. Wayland to Waveland
will be paying for much of the material needed including
windows, roofing, lumber and other hardware. If possible,
the organization might fund interior finishings such as
counters and cabinets.
So far, Wayland to Waveland has $35,000 in
cash donations and another $16,000 in materials contributed.
So, it’s a good start, but there is a long way to go.
October Waves
The “wave of relief” to rebuild three homes in Waveland will
kick off on October 12, led by Wayland builder Peter
Bachman. He and his crew will be leaving on the 9th driving
two trucks with supplies and tools.
There are nearly 30 adults signed up
already to work in Waveland between the 12th and the 26th.
More are needed, including an electrician and a carpenter.
There are two plumbers already scheduled to go. Other than
those specialties, specific skills are not required.
Details of logistics for anyone
considering volunteering are on the Wayland to Waveland Web
site (www.waylandtowaveland.org).
Volunteers should call Steering Committee Co-chair Cindy
Lombardo right away at 508-358-5958.
There are a number of other projects in
Waveland that people might also be able to do if there is
enough time and volunteers. The Wayland to Waveland group is
in touch with Waveland officials quite regularly to
coordinate needs.
Other Projects
Wayland to Waveland also is considering helping a young
family with a new baby that has serious medical issues. The
father is in the military and while given a reprieve on
being placed overseas, he’s still not at home full time and
the family house needs significant help to finish flooring,
a bathroom, etc. – this after more than a year!
The Wayland to Waveland group also is
looking into repeating the Holiday Santa Letter campaign
that helped create one-on-one relationships between people
and families in the two communities.
