Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Katrina Relief Group Kicks Off Fundraising Effort
$1.6 Million Needed, Less than $500K raised so far

SEPT. 24, 2007 – WAYLAND, MA – A major fundraising effort kicked off over the weekend as the Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Katrina Relief Committee aims to raise another $1.1 million in support of its latest project to build eight homes in Waveland this fall.

Letters went out to all Wayland residents asking for support. In the last week, Wayland to Waveland was pledged another $200,000 - 300,000 and is hoping the momentum will build.

The campaign will reach beyond Wayland to most of eastern Massachusetts as many of the builders and contractors participating are from a very wide area.
Similarly, volunteers are needed to help during the 16-week effort that will run from mid-October into February next year.

Contributions (which are tax deductible) can be made both online through the group’s Web site (http://www.waylandtowaveland.org) or mailed to the Wayland to Waveland Hurricane Relief Fund, c/o Town of Wayland, Town Building, 41 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.

Volunteers may sign up online by filling out a survey at the group’s Web site also. Just click on the link “Click Here to Volunteer.”

The new project involves eight area home builders and more than 350 employees and subcontractors who will be aided by volunteers. Already, support has come from groups in Boston, West Roxbury, Concord, Acton and many other towns around, some of which helped last year in efforts to rebuild three homes.

For more than two years now, Waveland residents have struggled to get back on their feet as their city was wiped out by the 38-foot storm surge that resulted in a 50-foot deep flood in the immediately coastal zone, crushing buildings, roads, railroads and more.

Eight lots on two sites in Waveland are ready for the builders to sweep in and start construction. The lots have been cleared, leveled and set with foundations.
