Events Thursday-Saturday, July 17-August 2, the Vokes Players present "Born Yesterday", Vokes Theater, 8pm (plus 2pm matinee on Saturdays). The Vokes Players present Garson Kanin’s beloved play Born Yesterday. Performances will be held at Beatrice Herford’s Vokes Theatre, Route 20 in Wayland, MA from July 17th through August 2nd, on Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8PM with a 2PM matinee on Saturday, July 26 and August 2. For tickets and information call 508-358-4034, or order online via www.vokesplayers.org. The production is directed by Doug Sanders. Ticket prices are $13.00 for Thursday evenings & Sat matinees and $16.00 for Friday & Saturday evenings. Born Yesterday is one of those theatrical rarities: a romantic comedy that has a political undercurrent and still hits home sixty years later. It sparkles with wit and intelligence without feeling the least bit dated. It centers on the love triangle of Billie Dawn, Harry Brock and Paul Verrall, whose lives converge in a unique way. Billie Dawn, a former dancer now living the life of a kept woman, has all the jewelry and clothes she could ever need. What more could a girl want? But her tough-guy lover Harry Brock wants much more from life and barrels into Washington to get some legislation passed to help his junk business. Very quickly, Billie’s lack of general knowledge and her ignorance of current events become a liability. For a crash course in nearly everything, Brock hires intellectual journalist Paul Verrall to share his knowledge with Billie. As might be expected, their teacher-student relationship blossoms into something much more – a touching and hilarious love story that, as might not be expected, resonates well beyond the usual “happily ever after” ending.
