"PAYT" Q&A with WAYLAND LANDFILL SUPERINTENDENT GEORGE RUSSELL on Friday, June 19, 11am.   Wayland Landfill Superintendent George Russell will be at the Wayland COA to discuss the new "Pay As You Throw" (PAYT) program that will be implemented at the landfill on July 1, 2009.  The informational coffee hour will be held Friday morning, June 19 at 11am in the Sr. Center.  Join us to learn what is changing – and what is not. The PAYT pertains only to household trash.The PAYT system encourages residents to generate less trash by recycling. The Landfill Superintendent will also field any general questions you have regarding disposal of specific items like medications, paints, etc. 

TOWN MATCH (Circuit Breaker) DEADLINE June 16, 2009:  If you are eligible but have not yet filed for the Wayland Town Match for Circuit Breaker, applications must received in the Assesssors Office no later than June 16, 2009.  If for any reason you applied for an extension on your 2008 return, or are filing an amended return, your application to request the Wayland Town Match MUST be filed within two months after your 2008 return is filed.

ILOT (Independent Living Options Taskforce) TO MEET JUNE 23:  The Independent Living Options Taskforce (ILOT) of Wayland and Lincoln will present progress reports at a meeting to be held in the Large Hearing room of the Wayland Town Building, 41 Cochituate Rd, on Tuesday, June 23 from 2-3:30pm.  The purpose of ILOT is to create a local non-profit organization, based on the model of Beacon Hill Village in Boston which provides services for older residents, allowing them options for aging in place. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. 

NEW IDEA FOR PROPERTY TAX RELIEF:  On Monday, June 15 at 10am, Wayland resident Dwight Scott will be at the Senior Center to share his concept for a new senior property tax relief plan.  His plan has been presented to the State Legislature through Rep. Tom Conroy. Join us for coffee while he explains how this could benefit our senior population if it is eventually passed in the State Legislature and adopted as a local option.

GRANDPARENTS AND ME: Wednesday, June 24, 10am.  This free event, sponsored by New York Life, is designed to promote, strengthen and celebrate the special bond that exists between grandparents and their children.  Spend a special morning together doing simple crafts and games.  Each child will leave with a craft project.  Reservations are required so we can plan supplies and refreshments accordingly.

PATRIOTIC LUNCHEON WITH POPULAR HONKY TONK PIANO PLAYER.  Celebrate the red, white and blue at our Patriotic Luncheon on Wednesday, July 1 at Noon.  Our menu will include barbecued pulled pork, pulled chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls watermelon, desserts.  The amazing honky tonk piano player Gary Landgren will perform. Reservations are required ($7 per person). 

PROPERTY TAX WORK-OFF APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE.  Applications are now available at the COA office for the FY2010 Tax Work-Off program.  Participants receive a $500 credit off their property tax bill in exchange for 62 hours of service to a Town Department prior to March 31, 2010. Applicants must complete a new application every years.  Application to the Tax Work Off program does not guarantee assignment to a Town Department.  If the COA receives more than 44 applicants prior to July 1, 2009, there will be a lottery.  

DONATE TO WHS FREEDOM PRIZE AND RECEIVE FREE COPY OF Wayland Veterans BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE.  Make a minimum $25 tax deductible donation to benefit WAYLAND HIGH SCHOOL FREEDOM PRIZE and receive a FREE hardcover copy of the Book of Remembrance.  What is the “FREEDOM PRIZE”? This is an annual essay competition for a $500 cash award presented to a Wayland High School student on Memorial Day.   The essays are developed from a student’s understanding of the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Over the past four years, 800 essays have been written by Wayland High students.  “Freedom Prize” donation checks should be made out to: Wayland Veterans Memorial Committee and presented at the Town Clerk’s Office where you will receive your free Book of Remembrance containing 100 personal stories from our Wayland Veterans covering the American Revolution to Baghdad and Afghanistan. Thank you for your support.

GENEALOGY MEETS TUESDAYS.  If you are interested in research techniques and the study of family ancestry and history, join this group that now meets on Tuesdays at 1:00pm at the Senior Center.

MAH JONGG  is held Mondays at 1:00pm at the Senior Center.  If you know how to play, join us.  If you have thought about playing and would like to learn, instruction is available.  This is a rummy type game played with tiles. 

MOVIES are shown in the Wayland Senior Center twice monthly. Showtime is 12:30pm. Popcorn and cold drinks are provided from our self-serve hospitality cart. It’s all complimentary! Bring a friend, and/or bring your lunch.  The next movie date is June 12 when the classic “To Kill A Mockingbird” starring Gregory Peck will be shown (1962).  The second movie date in June will be June 26.  The new release “Hotel For Dogs”, a PG comedy with Emma Roberts will be featured.

BRIDGE for ADVANCED BEGINNERS/INTERMEDIATE.  If you have basic skills and enjoy the game of bridge, consider joining this friendly group  who simply enjoy the opportunity to play and learn from each other.  Frequently there is an instructor who attends.  There is no fee for this program.  Registration is not required.  Players convene at 9am every Friday morning in the Senior Center.

TAI CHI with Robin Natanel.  FREE “Try It” Tai Chi class on Wed., June 10 from 10:30-11:30am. Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and  "sense" of balance. Tai Chi allows you to physically, mentally and emotionally  feel YOUR flow aligning with the flow of nature. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, Temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself.  Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain.   The next Tai Chi session will begin June 24 (10:30-11:30am, Hearing Room).  The fee is $20 for the 4 week session (or $8.00 class if you opt not to register for the 4 week program.

LOIS’ FIT FOR THE FUTURE   Tuesday & Thursday, 10—11a.m., Hearing Room, $2.00/class. Lois Leav, Instructor. Stretching, toning, aerobic fitness and weight work done to music. This  class adapts to all fitness levels. Exercises can be modified to meet individual needs.  Pay only when you come. This is enjoyable way to exercise and meet new people.  No pre-registration required.
