The 5th Congressional District is fortunate to have a number of fine Democrats running in the current special election to fill the seat being vacated by Congressman Marty Meehan. Niki Tsongas stands out in this field as the Democrat who can best represent this district, which includes Wayland precincts 1, 3 and 4. Wayland’s precinct 2 is in the district of Congressman Edward Markey.

Tsongas has been an exemplary and life-long leader in Massachusetts. She has been a community leader, lawyer, and, most recently, a dean at Middlesex Community College. She serves on both corporate and non-profit boards and understands how business and the public sector can work together for social, educational, and economic progress. She will fight hard for investment in education and job creation and in innovative growth strategies throughout the 5th District and especially in its critical urban centers, like Lowell and Lawrence.

Tsongas is the daughter of an Air Force Colonel and grew up on bases all across the U.S., Germany and Japan. She understands sacrifice, the importance of family, and the need to understand and listen to all points of view. She knows the proper role of the military and will go to Washington prepared to correct the simple-minded course that the Bush Administration has set both militarily and in other key areas.

Niki Tsongas was married to the late Senator Paul Tsongas who died after a courageous fight against cancer. She has raised their three accomplished daughters, who carry-on the family’s extraordinary commitment to public service. By sending Tsongas to Congress, this District will elect the first woman to the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation in 25 years. It is far past time for Massachusetts to bring some gender diversity to our Congressional Delegation!

Niki Tsongas is a strong and experienced leader with terrific ideas and energy who will make a difference for our state and our nation. I urge you to vote for Niki Tsongas in the Democratic Primary on September 4th.
