Metrowest Daily News 1/11/09: Schools: Wayland swimmers win in Rhode Island The Wayland girls swim team won three relays on its way to taking first at the Bay View Invitational at the University of Rhode Island. The Warriors scored 439 points to come out on top, while Weston (287 points) was second in the 25-team meet. Wayland’s Emily Wright won two individual events – the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Teammate Olivia Blahut was first in the 200-yard freestyle and won Senior Swimmer of the Meet.

In the relays, the Warriors’ 200-yard medley (Emily Downs, Valerie Eisenson, Katie Karlson, Wright), 200-yard freestyle (Wright, Downs, Michele Cunningham, Leah Jacques) and 400-yard freestyle (Cunningham, Blahut, Jacques, Karlson) all came out on top.

For Weston, Maddie Pierce won the 100-yard backstroke and was also named Freshman Swimmer of the Meet. Wayland’s Wright was second only to Olympian Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingston (R.I.) High) for Junior of the Meet.
