WEATHERIZING YOUR HOME
On Monday, March 8, from 7-9 p.m., the Library and Wayland’s Energy Initiatives Advisory Committee are co-sponsoring a program by the Massachusetts Municipal Association on “Weatherizing Your Home for Ultimate Savings” in the library’s Raytheon Room. The workshop is being supported also by Energy Unlimited, a local business providing energy conservation products, wood stoves, fireplaces, which will raffle off a product at the workshop. The program will stress the importance of reducing heat usage by providing do-it-yourself sealing techniques, tips on hiring a contractor for in-depth alterations, resources for home audits, resources for financing alterations, and provide free educational materials for attendees. Refreshments will be served.
 
GENEALOGY PROGRAM
On Saturday, March 20, the library will sponsor a two-part genealogical research program conducted by the New England Historical Genealogy Society on “How to Get
Started in Genealogy” and “Best Practices for Online Genealogy.” These programs are supported by donations in memory of the late Sally Dewey. Location: Raytheon Room.

AUTHOR JENNA BLUM
Author Jenna Blum, author of Those Who Save Us, will be at the library to talk about her books on the evening of Monday, February 22 at 7:30. Blum’s newest novel, The Stormchasers, will soon be published by Penguin. She is currently teaching novel workshops at Grub Street Writers in Boston.

AUTHOR DAVID BRODY
Local author David S. Brody will be at the library to talk about his newest novel, Cabal of the Westford Knight on the evening of Thursday, February 25, at 7:30. Reminiscent of the DaVinci Code, the book is a suspense novel inspired by the legend of the Westford Knight.

LEARN ABOUT HYPNOSIS
Our Great Presenter Series continues on Thursday, February 18, when Virginia Slep will present an “Introduction to Hypnosis.” In recent years, hypnosis has gained increasing respect from the medical community and health plans for its effectiveness. She will explain what hypnosis is and how it works and will conclude with a 20 minute demonstration session. Slep has a private practice in Clinical Hypnotherapy. She works closely with many doctors and hospitals in Boston and Metrowest and has offered hypnosis programs at Framingham State, Regis College, and Middlesex Community College. Our seventh Great Presenters program!
 
VACATION PROGRAMS FOR KIDS
We’ve planned some special programs over Winter Vacation week. For preschool children we have Creative Dance Theater coming on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. On Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m., kids can come in and explore the wonderful world of bugs with Bugworks. And on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. join us for the Ecology of Sound with Ricardo Frota, an interactive multicultural music performance. On Friday, February 19, we’ll be showing a family movie at 10:30 a.m. Based on the children’s book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, this animated adventure follows a scientist who tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance. 

THE NIGHTINGALE
On Friday, February 26, at 4:30 p.m. kids can join us for a reading of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, “The Nightingale.” Dancers from the Commonwealth Ballet Company will accompany the reading in costume to show us how a story can become a ballet. Dancers will be available for questions following the reading. Reading is suitable for children ages 3-10. Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
 
EXHIBITS
In February Paul Dale will exhibit a group of photographs entitled “Light at the Lake: The Wayland Town Beach at Its Finest.” The foyer contains “Spring is Coming,” an exhibit of vibrant watercolors by artist Michael Milburn

CLASSICAL STUDIES SERIES
Frank Smith will be back this year with a new Classical Studies Series entitled “Saga of the Early Roman Empire.” This five-part series will start on Thursday, February 25, at 1 p.m. There will be a sign-up sheet at the library.

THE IMPRESSIONISTS
On Mondays, March 8, 15, and 22, at 1 p.m. Judy Schurgin will be back for a three-part art history series focusing on the Impressionists–Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Edgar Degas. Sign up at the library circulation desk.

OSAMA
Our next Foreign Film will be “Osama” and will be shown on Tuesday, February 23, at 7 p.m. This powerful and remarkable drama chronicles the true story of a young girl in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan who must disguise herself as a boy to save her family from starvation. It is the first feature film made in Afghanistan in the post-Taliban era.
