The League of Women Voters and the Wayland Historical Society will co-sponsor “Iron-Jawed Angels” a film on women’s suffrage in honor of the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment and the founding of the League. Iron-Jawed Angels, a 2004 HBO movie starring Hilary Swank as Alice Paul, is an acclaimed production of the final years of the struggle to give American women the vote. On February 14, 1920, just months before the passage of the 19th Amendment, the League of Women Voters was formed under the leadership of Carrie Chapman Catt, who is also featured in the film. We can all take inspiration from the story of these intrepid women who labored under highly distressing conditions for the right to have their voices heard in the political sphere. We can also ask ourselves what is left to do [no woman has yet been elected to the highest offices in this country.} Why not? And what about Wayland women? Did they stand up for the principles of the suffragettes? Join us for this thought-provoking evening. Jane Sciacca, president of the Historical Society, will provide the historical background.
