Summary of January 11 Board of Selectmen Meeting

The following summary of the January 11 Board of Selectmen Meeting was contributed by Town Administrator Fred Turkington:

At the meeting of the Board of Selectmen held on Monday, January 11th, selectmen adopted the proposed composition and charge to a temporary advisory committee to be empaneled to review a number of procedural changes that have been suggested to improve Town Meeting, including electronic voting and separating town meeting into separate sessions for deliberation and voting. Citizens interested in serving on the committee should send a letter of interest that includes a brief biographical sketch to the selectmen and Town Moderator by January 27th.

Selectmen also adopted a set of proposed goals and objectives for 2010. A copy of the document will be posted on the BOS webpage on the Town website by Wednesday afternoon.

The Board also discussed the proposed composition and charge of an economic development committee. The idea to form such a committee was first included in the 2004 Master Plan of Development and more recently suggested by the Finance Committee as part of the long-range fiscal strategy for fiscal years 2011-2015. Selectmen asked to circulate the proposed resolution to the FinComm and Planning Board for comment before voting on the draft on January 25th.

Lastly, selectmen reviewed adjustments to the general government department and board budgets for FY2011 recommended by the Town Administrator. The Finance Committee had requested such a list in order to develop a non-override budget. The budget message and list of recommended budget adjustments totaling $420,000 will be posted by Wednesday afternoon on the Town web site.

Note the selectmen will meet jointly with the Finance Committee on Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the recommendations and then reconvene in the Selectmen's Meeting Room to complete the schedule agenda of business.
