Emerson Hospital likely to drop ALS service

Wayland Town Crier 10/7/09: Emerson Hospital likely to drop ALS service . With less than a year remaining on Emerson Hospital’s commitment to provide advanced life support (ALS) services to Concord and a dozen other surrounding towns, several local communities are working together to plan for life after Emerson’s ALS. In Wayland, the fire department is introducing its own advanced life support unit, an initiative six years in the making and which recently received approval from the state’s Office of Emergency Medical Services. Wayland’s regional ALS intercept service – also serving Lincoln, Sudbury and Weston – will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and could start later this month. Lincoln's Fire Chief said Lincoln will utilize Wayland’s service, but effective ALS really needs to be a 24-hour operation. A regional system could work, he said, but providing ALS services individually would help achieve the standard response time of 8 minutes when the coverage area is so spread out.
