The Children’s Way is a nationally accredited early childhood program located in the Wayland Town Building at 41 Cochituate Road. There are five classrooms with programs for children ages two through five. Enrollment is open for the 2010-11 school year, and two open houses are scheduled. Dates are Friday, October 23, and Tuesday, October 27, from 8:45 am to 10 am in the Selectmen’s Hearing Room. Before/After School Extension (BASE)

The BASE program has openings in the Wayland Middle School after-school program, and wait lists are established for the elementary school programs. Before-school programs are available in Loker, Claypit Hill, and Happy Hollow Schools and open at 7 a.m. Children may still enroll on a contract basis or drop-in but 24 hours notice is preferred (508-655-6403).

Daily programs feature a mix of activities and vary by school. Sample activities include active games and sports, multicultural activities, outdoor time, arts and crafts, science and nature exploration, media, cooking, clubs, homework time, and field trips.

Pegasus Summer Program

Summer 2009 enrollment edged toward 240 by the end of the six-week program held at the Wayland Middle School, surpassing last year’s record enrollment.  Children immersed themselves in Performing Arts, Fine & Applied Arts, Science, Games Galore, Incredible Adventures, and WPKN (Wayland Pegasus Kids News).
Special events – a Magic Show, Variety Show, Carnival Day, and Animal Adventures – and field trips took place weekly. Rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, an ocean pirate adventure, and trip to Davis’s Farm were just a few of the Wednesday field trip adventures. Enrollment information for 2010 will be available early this winter.

Global Languages

In after-school programs, K-5 children are exploring Spanish, French, and Chinese. In all programs, enrollment has increased. Teachers use a variety of methods to introduce and build on children’s skills. Basic language concepts, songs, cooking, instrument demonstrations, and games are key components of the curriculum. Fall enrollment is complete; winter enrollment will begin in early winter.

Community Education

Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band:  Under the leadership of Diane Muffitt, Wayland Middle School Band Director, the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Band continues to flourish, bringing together adult musicians of many ages and skill levels. WSCP is the official host of the band, which rehearses in the Wayland Middle School on Wednesday nights from 6:30 pm to 8:15 pm.

The band’s philosophy is “Your best is good enough.” At each rehearsal, there is time for groups at four different levels – from beginner to intermediate – to practice alone and together. Each evening also includes a break for socialization.

New Horizons is an international music movement, and under Ms. Muffitt’s leadership, Wayland’s group has thrived. New members are always welcome.
Registration information, a schedule, pictures, and more info is available at: www.svnhb.org or contact Ms. Muffitt at Diane_Muffitt@wayland.k12.ma.us.

New This Year:  Science Explorers Club:  Maggie Helon, Math & Science Curriculum Director, K-5, and Brian Jones, WSCP Director, are launching new after-school science initiatives for elementary students this year. There will be three programs offered, starting with the Science Explorers Club on October 20. Each week, children will explore the career of a different scientist. They will explore, discover, and create while learning about eight different branches of science. They will understand how a paleontologist learns about ancient life, what an ichthyologist studies (fish), what an astronomer sees when he/she looks at the night sky, and so much more.

There will also be a Rockin’ Robotics Club and another Science Explorers Club later in the year. For information, contact Maggie_Helon@wayland.k12.ma.us or Brian_Jones@wayland.k12.ma.us
