Sunday, October 11, Fourth Annual Wayland XC Festival, Wayland High School, starting at 9:30am

The Fourth Annual Wayland XC Festival, presented by the Baldwin Insurance Agency, will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at the Wayland High School. The main purpose of this event is to promote fitness in children and adults. Proceeds of the race will benefit the Wayland High School cross-country teams. This is a USATF-sanctioned event.

“Baldwin Insurance was established in 1959 in Wayland. We have a legacy of long-standing clients and a commitment to customer service,” said Dave D’Orlando, president of Baldwin Insurance Agency and a Wayland resident. “We also have a rich history of supporting community events.  We are very pleased to be a significant part of this event.”

The event includes three races – a three kilometer (1.86 miles) race for ages 11 to 14, a three kilometer race for ages 10 and under and an open five kilometer (3.1 miles) race.  This annual event continues to grow every year.  This year the Wayland XC Festival is expected to host 400 participants from Wayland and the surrounding towns.

The varied terrain of the cross-country course, traveling through fields and wooded trails, makes for challenging and exciting races. Unlike most cross-country races, the venue for the Wayland XC Challenge allows spectators terrific vantage points to see competitors throughout large portions of the races.

Another important distinction of the Wayland XC Challenge is its focus on youth athletes. Kids have their own 3K races. The youth races are for ages 14 and under and include the following classes: 8 and under, 9–10, 11–12, and 13–14. Trophies will be awarded to the top three boys and girls in each class. The youth 3K races start at 9:30am.
The open 5K race starts at 11am.  Awards include free shoes from Inov-8® and Vibram® FiveFingers® and gift certificates from Marathon Sports.  Special awards from Metrowest Massage and Healing will be presented to the top male and female runners from Wayland.

The pre-registration fee for the open 5K race is only $10.00 and the youth 3K is only $5.00.

Post-race amenities include a free raffle sponsored by Wayland Kitchens and food provided by Whole Foods Market of Wayland.

“I am proud to be part of this event,” said race director Eric Bucher.  “Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, especially the Baldwin Insurance Agency, our presenting sponsor, this looks to be our best cross-country festival ever. It is extremely fulfilling to work together with great companies to create an event like ours to promote fitness in children and adults. And with the continued support of all our sponsors and participants, including the free raffle sponsored by Wayland Kitchens, the Wayland High School cross country athletic programs can expect another healthy donation from our event this year.”
