Grade 1-5 at Claypit Hill School and Happy Hollow School

The primary goal of this Chinese language and culture class is to teach spoken and written Chinese to students in grades 1-5 whose primary language is English at entry and intermediate levels.

General Class Instruction
The Chinese phonetic system (Pinyin); vocabulary and phrases; dialogue and sentence patterns; and Chinese character brush strokes and handwriting.

Topics
Numbers and dates, colors and shapes, seasons and weather, animals and pets, greetings and introductions, family and friends, home and school, countries and people, food and holidays, costs and money, travel and transportation.

Culture Enrichment Activities
Chinese geography, people, history, and arts and traditions are introduced to students through games, songs, poems, crafts, and food. Class activities also include calligraphy lessons, cooking class, Chinese traditional music and other art demonstrations.

Teachers
All are native Mandarin speakers and experienced Chinese language and culture teachers.

When Classes are canceled:
If Wayland Public Schools cancels a school day for weather or other reasons, Chinese class will be cancelled and every reasonable effort will be made to reschedule.

Materials: Textbook and instruction CD are distributed the first week of class.

Tuition: 90-minute class

Snack: We will provide pretzels and apples for snack. During cooking demonstrations, regional cuisine will be available for sampling. A notice will be sent home prior to the demonstration(s).

I hereby give permission for my child to participate in a Chinese course sponsored by Wayland School Community Programs. I am responsible for prompt drop off and pick-up of my child. I understand that should my child have difficulty demonstrating classroom expectations, the teacher will contact me. If the expectations continue to not be met after parental involvement, I may be asked to withdraw my child from the program without a refund. Tuition will not be refunded after the start of the first class. We reserve the right to cancel the class if fewer than five children register; your tuition will be refunded.
