"a deflecting mission to the Apophis asteroid and would invite NASA, the European Space Agency, the Chinese space agency and others to join the project once it is finalized."

Apophis asteroid on Wiki...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis

So here are the statistics per NASA JPL http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=99942

Size: ~270 meters (~880 feet)
Period: 0.89 Years (Note the closeness to the Earth's solar period 1.0)
Distance from Sun: 1.098796069866035 AU (note the closeness to the Earth's Solar distance 1.0)

Impact Energy: 880 megatons (Thats BAD)
Point of comparison: The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa was the equivalent of roughly 200 megatons

Odds of Impact:
As of October 7, 2009, refinements to the precovery images of Apophis by the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy, the 90-inch Bok Telescope, and the Arecibo Observatory have generated a refined path that reduces the odds of a April 13, 2036 impact to about 1 in 250,000.

Point of comparison:
Odds of winning MEGA MILLIONS (Mass Lottery) for a $1 bet 1 in 175,711,536

Conclusion:
This would be the SAME odds as spending $703 on MEGA MILLIONS for one drawing.
So, the odds are small but most people don't spend that much money on one game.

Happy New Year 2010 !
