Constables fear losing their livelihood. The hundreds of constables in the state have found themselves at a legislative crossroads. Constables – appointed or elected people who serve judicial papers from eviction notices to subpoenas – are worried that a Beacon Hill push to raise the small claims threshold would wipe out their profession.
