BASE Programs Enrolling for Fall

Wayland School Community Programs is now accepting applications for the Before/After School Extension (BASE) program for the 2009-10 academic year.

BASE has before-school programs at Loker, Claypit Hill, and Happy Hollow Schools for K-5 children. The program operates from 7 am until the start of the school day. The after-school program begins at the close of the school day in each school and is open until 6 pm. Programs are available at Loker, Claypit Hill, Happy Hollow, and Wayland Middle School. The middle school program is for students in Grades 5-8, with the fifth graders from Happy Hollow and Claypit Hill School being transported by Wayland Public School buses.

The programs offer a variety of activities, depending on the interests and ages of the children. During before-school programs, children enjoy gym and outdoor play, board games, and hands-on, discovery-oriented play. Some children use the time for quiet reading or homework. Kindergartners this year enjoyed special events, such as a breakfast, a Fashion Show, and a Carnival to celebrate the end of the school year. When news of how the economy is affecting household pets, they even held a bake sale to benefit a local animal shelter.

At Loker School, there is also an extended day Kindergarten program, which includes lunch in the cafeteria followed by a balance of indoor and outdoor activities. Staff create activities appropriate for kindergartners’ interests in science, fine arts, cooking, sports, drama, and literacy.

In the after-school programs at the other schools, children enjoy snack together, have outdoor time, and a structured activity session. Some sites have clubs and special events. Children explore interests in media, drama, woodworking, literature, detective work, cooking, science, and more. This year, students at Happy Hollow School produced a Kids Page for the Boston Sunday Globe comic section, which is scheduled for publication in mid-August. Students also enjoy several all-sites events, such as a Halloween Festival, a Winter Carnival, and a Spring Fling. A highlight of the year is the annual BASE Family Night, which includes a Variety Show.

Flexible scheduling is available in Before-School programs. For after school, children come a minimum of two days a week. Rates are based on pick-up times, with contract ending times at 4:30 pm and 6 pm for Grades 1-8 children.

The Kindergarten has an extended day program, with pickup at 2:45 pm (1:35 on Wednesdays). Some children stay until 4:30 pm or 6 pm.
