Fed up with costly construction projects like the $197.3 million Newton North High School, the state decided last year to try a thriftier approach. Communities could modify the plans of two existing high schools, and theoretically save millions in design expenses. Natick signed on to the idea this month. But Wayland took a pass, finding the plans’ requirements were too rigid as Wayland, must not only meet a wide range of educational priorities but must also build on the current high school’s 70-acre site, close to wetlands, town wells, and the Sudbury River.
