Regarding the "shape of education" in Wayland, the recent work of the Futures Team represents great next-step thinking in this area. You can find documentation here, scrolling down to the first bullet under the "Other Documents/Information" sub-title.

Also, I found this Education Week article, "Don't Just Rebuild Schools—Reinvent Them", to be thought-provoking.

The August 2009 issue of District Administration reports on two experiments with longer school days/years.

The article compares the "little to no effect" outcome in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools with a more positive experience in Massachusetts.

However, the M-D finding was based on an outcomes study (the control group scored better in reading, math, and science, whereas the "School Improvement Zone" students performed better, albeit only slightly, in writing). By comparison, the MA conclusion was based *not* on outcomes, but rather, on teacher perceptions.

All in all, not a ringing endorsement of longer school days and years, at least not as implemented in M-D.
