Wayland wins state golf championship

Worcester Telegram 11/3/09: Tiny Hopedale has big finish. Wayland took the championship by storm, finishing with a 298 to beat Holliston by six strokes and win its first state golf title. It also keeps the state title in the hands of a Dual County League Small Division team for the third straight year. Wayland’s archrival, Weston, which placed fourth with 310, won the title in 2007 and ’08, and beat Wayland three times this year — twice in the regular season, and by one stroke in the Division 3 North final. Division 3 North individual champ Joe Cooper of Wayland overcame a rough start with birdies on six of the final 14 holes to shoot a 3-under-par 67 (34-33) and capture the state Division 3 individual championship. Cooper, who was 2 over after four holes, bested Pembroke’s Brandon Sturtevant (34-35) by two strokes, and helped give the Warriors the sweep.
