Thursdays, January 8, 15 and 22, Spanish Art Series, Wayland Library, 1-2:30pm.

Spanish culture influenced some of the West’s most significant and important artists from the sixteenth century to the present. El Greco created personal visions using distortion and unnatural colors. Velazquez produced court portraits as well as historical and mythological narratives. Goya not only painted court portraits and tapestry designs, but created works mocking the social mores of his time and the brutality and horrors of war. Join Judy Schurgin as she once again shares her enthusiasm and knowledge about art to teach us about the life and art of these influential artists. A graduate of Bates College, Judy has presented lectures on diverse artists for past 16 years at our library. She has been affiliated with the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and the Brookline Adult & Community Education Program for many years. In addition, Judy is a museum educator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This series is a great complement to the exhibit that just ended at the MFA-"El Greco to Velazquez: Art During the Reign of Philip III."
