Wayland Board of Health Press Release about Mosquito Control

PRESS RELEASE
WAYLAND BOARD OF HEALTH

6/20/09

The Wayland Board of Health would like the public to know that the catch basins in town have been treated with ALTOSID XR Briquets supplied by the Wayland Board of Health and distributed by the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project.

The treated catch basins are marked with a pink paint dot.  The Board of Health requests that the public check catch basins in their neighborhoods.  If your catch basin does not have a fresh pink mark, please contact the Board of Health at 508-358-3617 and give us the exact location of the catch basin.

Please note that a fresh orange dot indicates catch basins were cleaned this year by Wayland Highway Department contactors and does not indicate mosquito control.

This catch basin treatment is to reduce the number of the culex mosquitoes, which are known to reproduce in a catch basin type of environment.  The culex species are also known as “bridge” vectors that will feed on birds and people.  Later in the season, birds could be infected with West Nile Virus, and the catch basin treatment decreases the risk of West Nile Virus infecting people.

The Board of Health also asks the public’s help in identifying any private residential swimming pools that are not being maintained, so that we can arrange to have those pools treated by personnel of the East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project.

Expire:  Mid-July
