Recession brings hunger home. As the recession presses on, growing numbers of men and women are losing jobs or having their hours cut back, and that has them turning to food pantries to keep meals on the table. In affluent Wayland, the numbers are smaller, but the situation is similar: a growing number of residents need help, and the community eagerly responds. “We were very, very empty, and we put up a big sign, ‘Pantry is low – Please help,’ and we had a huge, huge response – we couldn’t fit all the food in the food pantry,” said Laurie Hojlo, a coordinator at Wayland’s Parmenter Food Pantry, at the Parmenter Community Care and Visiting Nurses Association.
