Wayland High School Students Learn How to Make Financial Decisions in the “Real World” at CU 4 Reality™ Financial Education Fair

THIS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2009 – 8:00AM TO 11:00AM

WHAT:  More than 80 ninth grade students from Wayland High School will make real-life decisions to help teach them financial skills during the CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair.

Sponsored by DCU (Digital Federal Credit Union), the CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair is an intensive 3-hour yet entertaining exercise that will give students a chance to see how career selection impacts their financial well-being and their life choices.  Participants will create a spending plan based on a salary and juggle needs versus wants to make sure they are living within their means in the “real world”. The fair will bring together students, teachers, volunteers and local business people to help students simulate actual financial decision-making.

Students will meet with local representatives of auto dealerships, realtors, lenders, utility providers, retailers and others to help them understand the real expenses they will face in adulthood and the choices they’ll need to make to avoid falling in to debt. Throughout the morning, students will gain important skills that will equip them to handle money responsibly, set and adhere to budgets, and avoid the pitfalls of debt. Carrying worksheets and calculators, the ultimate goal of each student will be presenting an even balance on their way out the door. Along the way, however, they will be faced with some obstacles. Some booths will offer the “temptations” of salons, electronics, entertainment and gym memberships — recreational items both desirable and costly — while as an added variable the students will be required to visit the “Wheel of Reality,” a take-off on the “Wheel of Fortune” that may saddle them with unexpected expenses.

A sampling of local businesses participating include: One Nancy Boyle Design, Farrell Volvo, NStar, Best Buy, JJ McKay’s Restaurant & Pub, Wayland Travel, Chisholm Insurance and Coldwell Banker.

The CU 4 Reality Financial Education Fair is also being made possible by a partnership with America’s Credit Union Museum which is housed in the building of the first U.S. credit union in Manchester, NH.
